There is a program called Screen for Linux. Other people recommend tmux, but I haven't found time to learn it. Nor do I really see a reason to.

  • C-a, C-a lets you flip flop between two screens.
  • C-a, " gives you a nice window list.
  • Screen supports split-screen, but it can be a little tricky to use:
    • Split display horizontally, C-a S
    • Split display vertically, C-a |
    • Jump to next display region, C-a tab
    • Remove current region, C-a X
